The Federal Construction Number

The U.S. federal government spends over **$200 billion a year** on construction-related contracts. Not on military hardware. Not on highways. On construction — buildings, facilities, renovations, civil works.

Set-aside programs (small business, women-owned, 8(a), HUBZone, service-disabled veteran-owned) collectively reserve roughly **25% of that** for businesses with qualifying designations.

That's **$50 billion a year** directed toward contractors who took the time to certify.

Most don't.

The Late Payment Stat Most Contractors Accept as Normal

The federal Prompt Payment Act requires federal agencies to pay contractors within **30 days** of receiving an approved invoice. After that, interest accrues automatically.

In practice, the actual average time-to-payment on federal construction invoices is closer to **45–60 days**. State and local agencies are often slower.

Most contractors don't know the federal interest rule exists. Those who do know how to invoke it — politely, formally, in writing — get paid faster than those who don't.
