What an EIN Is (and Why Every Construction Business Needs One)
An Employer Identification Number is a nine-digit number the IRS issues to identify a business — like a Social Security number, but for the company itself. It's free. It takes about 10 minutes to apply for online at IRS.gov.
For a construction business, the EIN is the first piece of the paperwork stack. Without it, the business can't open a business checking account, can't file taxes separately from personal taxes, can't hire employees, and can't build business credit. Subs can technically work without one in some cases. Generals can't operate at scale without one. Government contractors must have one.
It's the cheapest, fastest piece of paperwork a contractor will ever get — and it unlocks everything that comes next.
